My friend Kathryn and I spent the morning together talking about photography and shooting pictures at Masterson Park. She wanted to take part in next Saturday's photography class (see post below) but will be heading back for her second semester at Howard Payne University early next week, so we did a 2-hour one-on-one version of what the class will cover.

We talked about elements of composition and depth of field:

We discussed looking at things from more than one angle to find the one we like best:

We experimented with slight changes in our point of view to frame subjects:

We picked a subject to walk around and noticed how the light and background changed:

And we finished up the shoot with Kathryn unknowingly becoming my subject:

Remember what I said about choosing my friends wisely? Bailey is further proof of that statement. She is the older sister of Delaney, whose session sneak peek I posted here. Two sisters could not be more different yet equally wonderfully made:

How gorgeous is this mommy-to-be ballerina!

After months and months and months of waiting (about 8, to be exact), it was finally time for Melissa's maternity session, and I do believe we captured the belly in all its radiant glory:

(sigh) I just love those two shots, especially in black and white. This baby is obviously so adored already!

Mark and Mia joined us for a few family shots as well. They were quite willing to tickle and hug Melissa and "Marble." I mysef am looking forward to my own turn at tickling and hugging and photographing this baby!

I think Big Sister Mia is ready for duty. May these last few weeks of anticipation be filled with joy and plenty of extra sleep. Thanks so much for letting me spend the morning with the 3 and 8/9ths of you to capture this special time in your lives!

First, the many faces of our cat Honey. I made the mistake of driving home and sitting in my car just a little too long yesterday, then looked up to find Honey staring me down through the windshield. She was clearly annoyed (can't you see it in the top left photo?) that it was nearly noon and she had not been fed at all. She then proceeded to withhold direct eye contact just to make me feel even worse. Lucky for me, Honey eventually decided to release me from my cell as she ran to sit on the porch and hurry me along with loud meows. Lucky for you, I happened to have my camera handy and snag these:

AHS choir members gave two terrific performances at their First Annual Festival of Carols madrigal dinner this weekend. If you missed it, don't worry -- they plan to make it a tradition, so just mark your calendar for next year.

I took photos during one promotional performance, at the first dress rehearsal, and just before the second dinner performance, mainly trying to capture the variety of great costumes put together for the show -- and I say that as a proud mama amazed by my own daughter's creativity!

I don't know about you, but my heart beats a little bit faster when I look at these engagement portraits of Callie and Danny. In spite of mosquitoes, super-enthusiastic guard dogs, alligator warnings and dreary skies, these two were willing to try any location I suggested. Of course, the toughest part was being asked to look into one another's eyes and kiss on cue. Can't you see how difficult that was?

Callie had always wanted to have portraits made in front of Angleton's Famous Red Door, so of course we made a stop there. I've used this location several times before but had never fully appreciated the lovely arch above the door. Maybe the glowing subjects standing beneath it helped bring out its beauty!

I'm so glad we were able to capture these moments for you -- and now you can check off one more item from your wedding details To Do list! I can't wait for your big day in April and the life of love that lies ahead of you.

Here are two more cuties who came to see me during my Mini-Session Day last weekend. Piper and Reese are cousins who are bound to grow up to be the best of friends... especially once Piper can be trusted not to grab handfuls of hair!

Even though each girl has her own unique look, it's not hard to see that they share many of the same beautiful genes. I was dazzled by both sets of blue eyes!

Kaylyn brought her Mommy, Grammy, and Great-Grammy along for a mini-session yesterday at Sunny Hearts. There was only one teeny tiny problem: Kaylyn was not at all interested in sitting down for a ladylike four-generation portrait. She had other things in mind, and I was happy to play along. After all, there were steps and walls to climb and pumpkins to be inspected!

Before long, Kaylyn decided that taking pictures might actually be a fun thing to do, so she let the rest of us catch up with her every now and then.

At long last, the lovely grown-up ladies welcomed her back for another try, and this is the shot we captured:

I hope that this post can be kept secret from a certain groom-to-be. With any luck, he doesn't even know that this blog exists. The rest of you, however, simply must see this gorgeous bride:

I have to confess that Jessica is my cousin Sandy's daughter, but that in no way colors my totally objective opinion. Some truths just cannot be disputed.

We had fun trying out all sorts of poses and lighting at my favorite new East Columbia location. The fun could have continued for several more hours -- if only we both hadn't been silly enough to make other plans for the evening.

"So who is the lucky groom?" you're surely asking yourself. Well it's none other than Dallas, the most good-natured and up-for-anything guy I've yet to work with:

I'm thinking that this is going to be one happy household! Only three months until the big day -- hang in there, you two (and mother-of-the-bride Sandy). The best is truly yet to come.

Christine stopped by recently for a whirlwind headshot session. I love the way the colors turned out in these!

I'm happy to report that our dear old dog Fly survived the hurricane. She is an outdoor dog who had to be left behind to fend for herself during the evacuation. Fortunately for all of us, Fly is quite a skilled huntress, so we knew she wouldn't go hungry even if the neighborhood raccoons stole all of her dog food. All seemed to go just as planned...except that her coat was even filthier and more matted than usual when we returned. The time had come for two of Fly's least favorite events: riding in the car and visiting the doggie beautician.

Not even a hurricane could dampen a certain groom's wedding day excitement last night. You've met Grace, now meet Will:

People came from miles around to share in their celebration. We also wiped away tears as Grace's dad (who is also the newlyweds' pastor) led the ceremony and fought unsuccessfully to keep his emotions from getting the better of him.

I'm not a "real" wedding photographer, but I simply had to grab a few candid shots. After all, I am the granddaughter of Lydia Munson Stevens Shepherd, who was well-known for snapping hundreds of pictures at every family event and was an early inspiration for my own photographic efforts. I joked with my cousin Lloyd, father of the groom, that Grandmother would have been especially proud of these shots I caught of him -- he was, shall we say, mighty uncooperative in our childhood and saw nothing wrong with hiding under the front porch any time Grandmother whipped out her camera. These are for you, Lydia!

But back to the Main Event. No words can match the shy sweetness visible in both of these faces:

When a hurricane is headed your way, how do you pray? Asking that it go somewhere other than your home feels so selfish -- that means it has to head toward someone else's home. It was hard for me to face the fact that Hurricane Ike was indeed chugging toward our coastal area, especially since I kept reliving the apocalyptic trauma of our Hurricane Rita evacuation three years ago. I finally decided to pray that the storm would simply lose intensity and spin itself down before it made landfall, preferably in the least developed spot possible. As devastating as Ike was, he could have been so much more deadly. While I'm thankful that Brazoria County was spared a direct hit, I'm sad to report that my friend Kelly's 1900 Galveston storm survivor did take on about a foot of water. Here's the way her house looked for our SRS Reunion a couple of months ago:

Our family evacuated to Austin on Thursday morning and spent three nights cooped up in a motel filled with fellow evacuees from the Texas Gulf coast. We did get to hang out with Tyler, our favorite Austinite, including an evening on the infamous Sixth Street. We confirmed once and for all that A) we do not belong on Sixth Street and B) we have no business trying to help "Keep Austin Weird!"With gasoline shortages and price increases looming, we hated to do much driving. We did take a short break from watching Saturday's storm coverage by cruising around town for a bit. Here I am hanging out of the car window, snapping random shots to entertain myself:

The dome of the state capitol building beckoned us in that direction, where we wandered around the grounds for a while and found lots of interesting details:

To our great surprise, we discovered that the doors to the building were open and we were allowed to go inside for the last few minutes before closing time. I immediately coerced Curtis and Maggie into an obligatory "just one quick photo, pleeeeeeease" sort of shot. Don't they look happy?

I suppose THIS is the sort of photo they would prefer that I take. (I have no idea what is going on here, by the way.)

Not completely finished embarrassing Maggie yet, I got this next shot by, you guessed it, lying on the floor of the rotunda. With other people standing around. Staring at me. Then I made Maggie help me up so that no one could doubt that she was with me. It was awesome!

Finally, here are three very different looks at the capitol dome. What a gorgeous building!

We returned home on Sunday to find our house still in one piece with only a few shingles blown off the roof and several smallish trees scattered around the yard. The electricity was off, but a cool front mercifully arrived just in the nick of time to keep us comfortable as we camped out in the front room with the windows open. Our power was restored Monday night, and Tuesday we got word that the water supply is safe to drink again. Best of all, La Casona is up and running again and we enjoyed every bite of our celebratory dinner.

Why have we been blessed to experience only minor inconveniences from this storm while others have lost everything? Why was the storm surge significantly less than feared but so many miles of coastland now lie in shambles? Why has loss of life been kept to a miraculous minimum in spite of such a large number of homes being swept away with hardly a trace?

Only God knows the answers to these questions and the many more being asked tonight. For me it is enough to believe that He does know all of the answers. Now I pray that all of those suffering tremendous hardship will know God's comfort and daily provision. May my hands and feet be used in whatever way needed to help bring that comfort and provision.

Grace is the perfect name for this beautiful young bride-to-be. She radiates peace, humility and security in her Father's arms. Grace and her intended (my cousin Will) look forward to being sent out together into the missionary field, where God will surely use this ambassador:

But no matter how far away from Texas she may go, Grace will always be a country girl at heart.

This portrait session also led me to cross paths with several generous people who help keep East Columbia not only a historic treasure but a marvelous place to live. Thank you Rev. Jim Gentner (Bethel Presbyterian Church), Beth Griggs (Underwood House) and Bonnie Maynard for your warm hospitality. We truly hated to leave!

Grace and Will, I wish you all the best and look forward to the countless miracles you'll be a part of throughout your marriage.

I just returned from visiting my "home away from home" -- Seattle and Vashon Island WA, where my parents, brother and sister-in-law live. During my kids' growing up years, we spent two to three weeks there every summer, and the kids assumed everyone visited their grannies in Seattle. The beauty of the area is addicting, so don't visit once if you have no intention of making lots of return trips!

I had fun taking lots of non-portrait shots for a change, beginning with this abandoned greenhouse on Vashon that my husband Curtis and I first noticed about 23 years ago:

Once upon a time, in the late summer of 1978, six young women traveled from all parts of Texas to the sleepy little college town of Georgetown. There they discovered the joys of Commons food, sleeping and studying within 120 square feet of shared space, waking up just in time to throw on sweats and run across campus for an 8:00 class, and taking ballroom dance classes in the SUB. Before a month had passed, the girls had declared themselves fast friends and began making routine runs to Sonic, RamGro and Wag-a-Bag. They were the Sonic Rainbow Sorority, or SRS for short.

The stars recently aligned to reunite all of the SRS for the first time in 30 years. Seven of their 16 offspring came along to witness the sisterhood and silliness that picked up right where we left off so many years ago:
Even though we've moved far away from our LK dorm rooms (from the left: I live in Angleton TX, Kelly lives in Galveston, Jeanie lives in Sarasota FL, Cindy lives in Cuero TX, Robin lives in Saudi Arabia, and Jannae lives in Denton TX), it turns out that our hearts remain close. Our journeys have seemed different on the surface, but underneath it all we've shared very similar experiences and concerns and priorities and struggles and delights. We all were encouraged by our time together and plan to meet again before another 30 years pass!

On my 84th birthday, I hope this many people show up to help me celebrate! Mrs. Mary was blessed to be surrounded by nearly all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on her big day. One of her grandsons arranged a surprise portrait session, and we got lots of great group shots. First one of the whole gang:

How could I NOT be a portrait photographer when this gorgeous girl (young woman, really) lives at my house?!

We had a lot of fun shooting these over the course of a couple of days, especially since it gave Maggie an extra chance to wear her prom dress. Thanks for always being willing to have my camera pointed at you, shug, and thanks also to Haley and Cameron for putting up with Maggie's crazy mom!

Over the past week I've taken photos of a foreign ambassador, a national award winner, a new physical therapist and four graduating seniors. PLUS I've had the pleasure of designing several sets of graduation announcements with more to come, AND I'll be spending the day at the Wilderness Golf Course on Friday taking pics of ADMC golf tournament teams and winners.

I hope this helps you all understand why you must not set foot inside my house under any circumstances!

Let me introduce you to Nate, a real character who is not only wonderfully made but also being wonderfully REmade:

In August, Nate and his brother Nick were in a serious auto accident. The past six months have brought long hospital stays and intense rehab for Nate, but mom Becky says suffering has been matched step for step with blessing. Nate is now standing unassisted for longer and longer periods of time, and I have no doubt he'll reach his goal of walking in time for Spring Break.

I've got lots more pics to post, but tonight I just want to share one of my very favorite Thomas Merton quotes. These words helped pull me out of a deep, dark pit a couple of years ago, and they continue to inspire me today:
Humility consists in being precisely the person you actually are before God, and since no two people are alike, if you have the humility to be yourself you will not be like anyone else in the whole universe. It is not humility to insist on being someone that you are not. It is as much as saying that you know better than God who you are and who you ought to be. It takes heroic humility to be yourself and to be nobody but the person, or the artist, that God intended you to be.

These thoughts both challenge and encourage me, and I hope they reach someone else who needs to hear them.
